Marine Litter

The following document provides a definition on marine litter, where they are met, how they are distinguished (either through inland or marine activities), what are the major types and how they are categorized (according to where in the water column are found), and finally their major consequences (ecological, socio-economic and human health). "Marine litter is any persistent, manufactured or processed solid material discarded, disposed of or abandoned in the marine and coastal environment. Marine litter consists of items that have been made or used by people and deliberately discarded or unintentionally lost into the sea and on beaches including such materials transported into the marine environment from land by rivers, draining or sewage systems or winds. For example, marine litter consists of: plastics, wood, metals, glass, rubber, clothing, paper etc. This definition does not include semi-solid remains of for example mineral and vegetable oils, paraffin and chemicals that sometime litter sea and shores" (MSFD Task Group 10 report, European Commission/JRC/Ifremer/ICES 2010).
Additionally the text presents the size of the marine litter issues in the Greek coasts and what has been found so far to the bottom of the Greek seas.
