'Message of the Sea' Program: Art & Scientific Exhibits

The Goulandri Museum of Natural History, a pioneering institution in environmental education in Greece since the 1960s, has created the program "The Message of the Sea" in cooperation with the Hellenic Centre for Marine Research (HCMR), the PERSEUS research project (FP7), the University of Patras, the Mediterranean Information Office for Environment, Culture and Sustainable Development MIO-ECSDE (MARLISCO), the organization Plastic Pollution Coalition and the Drifters Project (USA).

The Program includes both an art and science exhibit as well as a series of activities of scientific and educational interest at the museum's premises.  

EXHIBITION

The Art Exhibition in collaboration with two US organizations, the Plastic Pollution Coalition of Dianna Cohen and the Drifters Project of Pam Longobardi, with projects created from plastic items

The Scientific Exhibit in collaboration with

1. The Hellenic Centre for Marine Research (HCMR), the PERSEUS research project, and the University of Patras. It includes the latest results of research on marine pollution from plastic objects. Particular emphasis is given to the Greek seas.

2. The Mediterranean Information Office for Environment, Culture and Sustainable Development (MIO-ECSDE) with the Report on marine litter that was set up under the European MARLISCO Program (MARine LItter in Europe Seas: Social AwarenesS and CO-Responsibility) . The Report focuses on the main causes of marine litter, impacts on marine life, ecosystems and humans and poses the key question: Can I be part of the solution?

• 6 June, Workshop on "Marine pollution by plastic: Present and Future" with internationally renowned scientists:

- Dr. Francois Galgani, the internationally renowned French oceanographer biologist, an expert on marine pollution from microplastics (IFREMER - France)

- Dr. Evangelos Papathanassiou, Research Director, Institute of Oceanography of HCMR, PERSEUS project coordinator PERSEUS (FP7).

- Professor Michael Scoullos, Department of Environmental Chemistry, University of Athens

- Professor George Papatheodorou, Department of Geology, University of Patras

- Assist. Prof.. Golden Karapanagioti, Tmimatos Chemistry, University of Patras

- Dr. Christina Zeri, Principal Researcher, HCMR
