RESULTS FOR WP8: Training and Capacity Building

The main objective of WP8 is to train and build capacity for scientists and technicians in the Mediterranean and Black Seas in principles such as ecosystem modeling, monitoring and environmental assessment, in order to allow them to best apply the Marine Strategy Framework Directive (MSFD), 2008/56/EC under a framework that will be further linked to existing national and international initiatives.

Additionally, it will address the need for both EU and non-EU states to adopt a common framework and regional approach with regards to:
(i) environmental policy development;
(ii) common monitoring practices;
(iii) use of common assessment tools.

During the four years of the project’s lifetime the training activities include two Summer Schools as well as three training courses and three training visits.

The deliverables available currently are presented below.

Deliverable 8.1: Summer Schools
Within Task 8.1, the first PERSEUS Summer School  in Constanta, Romania entitled 'The contribution of environmental indices in meeting the objectives and principles of the Marine Strategy Framework Directive' was held in 3-7 June 2013 with great success.

Young researchers and students from several European countries, including Romania, Turkey, Italy and Spain were given the opportunity to seek on identifying the problems facing the Black Sea, and attempting to propose solutions and environmental policies.

An excellent organisation should be acknowledged to the National Institute for Marine Research and Development (NIMRD) Grigore Antipa, and a high scientific level for the content too, planned jointly with Consorzio Nazionale Interuniversitario per le Scienze del Mare (CoNISMa) and the University of Malta (UoM).
