1ST DAY
Dr. Vangelis Papathanassiou , Research Director at the Hellenic Centre for Marine Research - Coordinator PERSEUS, (link presentation) welcomed us and wished us " Happy Seas Persians". He presented the research activities and actions of the Hellenic Centre for Marine Research.
Mr. Nikos Streftaris , the PERSEUS Project Manager informed us about the «PERSEUS» project, as well as the goal and vision of this particular oceanographic training mission . "... Students will work like real scientists on data which will be delivered to the project".
Then Dr . Fermeli, Environmental Education Department of the 1st Directorate of Secondary Education of Athens, (PERSEUS @ SCHOOL network), (link presentation) informed us about the International Network for Environmental Education : "My school voyages with PERSEUS". The level of the mission is high and the students are working side by side with their teachers and scientists.
Mr. Andreas Athanasopoulos, Manager of Lavrion Environmental Educational Centre (presentation in Greek), updated us on the guest house rules, and how it is used as a an educational space for the needs of the Centre's activities. It is the central meeting point fot students, where they can rest and relax after a long and adventurous day!
The opening of one of the scientific issues that will be approached through PERSEUS @ SCHOOL was done by Dr. Popi Pagou, who spoke about eutrophication and the food web .
With great interest, the children watched M. Kallergis, L. Manoussakis and F.Pantazoglou from the Underwater Activities Team (in Greek) present the use of robotic vehicles ROV, MaxRover II and the two smaller ones, Falcon and Seabotix.
The preparation stage requires working groups. We have to split into two groups A - B and the coordinators Dr.Georgia Fermeli, Dr. Ioanna Papaioannou, Dr . Stavroula Alexandropoulou, Ms. Elena Ermidou.
The students who participate in this oceanographic mission have worked on the thematic network "My school voyages with PERSEUS" before, therefore they presented (1st & 4th High Schools of Dafne & General High School of Kamares) the work they have done in their schools.
Dr. Papathanassiou, Mr. Streftaris and Ms. Fermeli are responsible for our cooperation with the HCMR scientists of HCMR , allocating roles and responsibilities to team members for both training missions with the R/V AEGAEO.
Scientists , who managed to be there despite their demanding work schedule, are keen to offer and share experiences with the students. These are: Dr . K. Pagou . Dr. A. Giannakourou, Dr . C. Kontogiannis, Dr.Chatzianestis, Dr . A. Pavlidis, Mr. Ch. Ioakimidis (PhD candidate), Dr . G. Papatheodorou, Dr . G. Asimakopoulos, Dr . L.Giannoudi.
The meeting went well and we're ready for the PERSEUS journey, after a good dinner, and able to dream of tomorrow!
