Overfishing

The following document provides an introduction to fisheries in Greece, the problem of overfishing, sustainable exploitation, the effects of overfishing, ways to a sustainable fish production and marine protected areas. The total biomass of one or more species removed from the ecosystem during fishing is known as catch. A part of this will be handled through the markets and recorded but smaller individuals will be thrown back to the sea due to low commercial value. Nowadays, in the Greece there are two categories of fishing vessels, coastal and average fishing ones. The former are generally small in size and capacity, using either towed winch, or other tools such as nets, lines (surface or bottom) and traps (crabs). The composition of the catch in coastal vessels varies depending on the type and specifications of the available fishing gear and the season. Recent figures according to the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) show that the worldwide, the Mediterranean and the Greek fish production amounts to 70.000.000, 1.000.000 and 150.000 tonnes, respectively.
